General Learning

I have been revising the readings of the previous modules and working on the resource project these days. As the resource project required, I need to go back to the modules I did from a few weeks before, and check where neccesary to add a link for the "Help" function. Thats a good chance for revision indeed.

The assignment itself is actually quite useful for me to get familiar with the format of annotation, and the work I am working on could be useful for the future students on this unit as all the links are closely related to the topics. :)

OK, need some sleep I reckon, cya

Module 4 - Boolean searching Task

the use of logical operators will filter the searching results. and for the biggest hits searched from "advanced internet users" is "advanced or internet or users", coz the engine searched all the results related to advanced or internet or users, and there are 626,000,000 results.

for the results of "advanced internet users", I inputted "advanced and internet and users and skilled", and there 3,900,000 results.

Module 4 - Searching Tasks

1. Here is what I got when I saerched "advanced internet users" on "google": 326,000,000 results

2. Here is what I have found by using searchmanager: 40 results

By comparing these two engines, it has been clear that "google" is much stronger, there are enormous results, and other relative results are also shown there. I just love "google".

Module 4 - Downloading Tools

1. Adobe's pdf reader
this is an essential software for all the users surfing on the web as lots of documents are pdf files. The lucky thing for this task is that I have been this for a long time both on my Uni study and the personal life, so I can say I am quite familiar with this.

2. Media Players
here it is. I downloaded Apple's QuickTime player, and it looks just like other media players. I havent noticed how different it is from others, but I am gonna keeping testing later on.

3. Search Manager/Combiners

this is an searching engine combined with many searching engine together, I feel pretty ok with it although I dont think it is a neccesary tool when we are very convenient to use "google" and other searching webs.

4. Bookmark Manager

this is a software that manage bookmarks, I dont think it is useful for me. so I just roughly get to understand it, and know how it works just in case sometimes I have to use it (maybe not).

5. Pagesucker

this is a software that could download a website, at least I saw it working by downloading something form the webpage I intered.

Module 3 - WWW Standards

By reading all the readings provided in the tutotial, I have summarised five the most important rules for writting web:

1. make your writting clear for the readers.
this rule may include two parts. one is that you have to make sure the readers know what you are talking about. Sometimes when people write webs, they forget they are showing their work to audience and ignored a lot of background information, then the articles or the webs seem unclear. Secondly, dont make the web too boring, and get rid of making it too long.

2. suitable layout
make sure the web has good color and good writting style. this will make the web more interesting, coz nobady likes boring articles.

3. Propriate images
only use images neccesarily and propriately.

4. Correct Links
make links correct and useful, and avoid making the web complicated. sometimes too many links will make the audience lost, and ignore your web's main purpose.

5. dont make the audiences away from their expectations
audiences have their normal expectations for web sites, so if you make your web too strange or too different from others, they can not accept it.

Module 3 - Blog Task

for this task, I think when you visit my this learning log, you can see that I have gained this kind of knowldge pretty weel :)

Module 3 - ftp Task

The url of my uploaded page on webCT is:

Module 3 - HTML Tags (4)

Lesson 7: Graphics
This is an interesting topic, adding pictures onto the webpage, and it will make the web much more attractive. For this lesson, I just followed the steps the tutorial provided, downloading the image and put it onto my test page.

Lesson 8: Linking it with Anchors
(a) Things are getting complicated. This session introduced how to create links to an HTML document, and how to display a picture. The examples provided by the tutorial are quite clear so that what I did was to understand the lesson and follow the practice’s steps, and here it is:
(b) Similar knowledge has been taught here, the methods of how to create links to other web sites is presented here.

Lecture 9: Preformatted Text
Lecture 10: Special Characters
Lecture 11: Definition Lists
Lecture 12: Address Footers and E-Mail Links
Lecture 13: You Can Blockquote Me on That!

for the lectures from 9 to 13, I have been following all the steps of the tutorials, and it works very well.

Lecture 14: Lumping vs. Splitting
this lesson is a bit time consuming. but the lucky thing is the instruction of the toturial is very clear.

Module 3 - HTML Tags (3)

Lesson 4: Breaking it up into paragraphs
This lesson is about “paragraph breaks”, I feel pretty ok as the example is quite clear.
Here is my work.

Lesson 5: Doing it with Style
This is a quite useful method, and it will make the texts more interesting.

Lesson 6: Lists, Lists, Lists
For this lesson I spent more time than the previous ones, coz there are many types of lists, and sometimes lists consist lists, which makes the coding structure complex, so for these reasons, I firstly spend much time on fully understanding all the types of lists, and make sure that I can use them when necessary, then I followed the steps of the practice, it then became much easier.

Module 3 - HTML Tags (2)

For the second tutorial, this is the main lesson for me; I did spend quite a lot of time on it.

Lesson 1: Creating Your First HTML Document
For the first lesson, a few of basic knowledge on HTML has been covered. It roughly covers what the HTML is, and how a webpage is constructed. As you can see, the first lesson is more like a “getting started” lesson, and help beginners get ready. So as it is expected, I am ready now.

Note: ignore the Chinese characters, coz I am using a Chinese Version windows Xp

Lesson 2: Modifying an HTML Document
This lesson is definitely a revision lesson, it just asked me to add a few of sentences to the document I have written before. Thanks for reminding me on this topic, but be honest, this lesson is useless.

Lesson 3: Headings: six levels deep
Good lesson, short and clear. I have learned how to make headers in different sizes, and the practice emphasized me on the structure of the code writing. Actually what I will always remind myself about is “do make clear structure on the code, and it will make this work much easier”.

Module 3 - HTML Tags (1)

For this module I am going to start from tasks, the reason why I changed my study style is that the tasks from this module include a large amount of practice and tutorials, so I will just follow these tutorials and record what I learned from them.

The first task is about “HTML tags”. The task provides two tutorials; the first one is the“Introduction to HTML”, and it firstly introduced some general nones for HTML, they seem alright. For the first example given, it shows how to display a sentence on browser, and the codes look just like some basic java or C++ codes, so I think I got an easy start, and hope this feeling will be kept. After that I used half an hour to complete the first reading, and my feeling is I cant remember all of these comments, and I have to come back checking when I really start coding.

Module 1 & 2 Self-evaluation

after the study of the first two modules, I did the self -evaluation. Unfortunately I got 50%, not really good I reckon, and the most of the mistakes are about the short answers. therefore, for the later studies, I think I need to spend more time on the readings, for the deeper understanding. sometimes things are just like this, you think you have understood it, then you got test, you got failed. so there is no other choices really, and just need more time for deeper reading.

Module 2 - Newsgroup Tasks

I have spend much more time on this task than others. At the beginning, I was quite confused on the difference between this and discussion board, but after I tried "wiki", it has been much more clearer. In discussion boards, the topics could be widely, and you have to really go to that board for checking replies like our webCT discussion board. However, the newsgroups might be checked in two ways, going onto the platform directly or receiving replies by emails, and it is the significant difference from discussion board.

Then I started to try posting my topic, but I got problems again, I felt fully confused on the names and the IP adresses of different groups, besides this, I was supposed to send a "Request For Post" to "news.announce.newgroup", but I got lost again, then I had to go back to our webCT discussion board for help. fortunately, I got answers there. I logged ongo "groupsbeta.google.com" and created my topic like this (about my favourite soccer team: AC Milan):

if you saw some Chinese chracters, thats alright, dont be scared coz I use it. then the only thing I can do is waiting I reckon, so I will put some replies later, and move to the next module.

Module 2 - Lists Tasks

1. What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?

(1) Email Lists
(a) Pros
You can receive a particular kind of news or articles from a group you are interested in, and you dont have to reply it. The information will be sent to the email box automatically and they are updated, which saves a lot of time on checking different sorts of informations.
(b) Cons
you cant join into the communication talking when you wanna share your views on some particular topics, and besides this, sometimes you dont wanna read these information or you have lost the interest but they still keep coming.

(2) Discussion Board
(a) Pros
you can join a group pf people who have the same intersets, and you can communicate with them effectively. the difference from email list is that you can decide your activities all depending on your time schedule.
(b)cons
sometimes the massages from discussion board are not refered to the particular topics.

2. Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

For email lists, commercial topics might be more suitable, coz they can be updated automatically, and they 100% suits your requirest from particular products or topics.

For discussion boads, this is a much widely platform. like our webCT discussion board, it provides an opportunities for students for their studies, they can ask questions, and communicate everything on the topics they join. what is more, it also suits for people on the topics for their outter life, people could talk about sports, music, movies, and everything on their particular topics if possible.

Module 2 - Chat Tasks

ICQ
Honestly I am not a ICQ man, but for this task I still downloaded it and installed it on my PC. I visited the website provided and found the lasted verision, then I just followed the steps for intallation and added a few of people from the net. It was a bit fun checking other people's profiles(some people made it pretty interesting). I spent 10 minutes just talking a little bit with my added "friends", then I felt pretty confident about this. then I felt I have done this task.

IRC
I downloaded this software on the website provided, followed the similar steps as ICQ, and then put some general information on. after that, the platform is quite different from ICQ's platform. I think I should find some groups, and join their discussion or something. Then I tried to inputted "AUSTNET" into some possible blanks, after 10 minutes trying, I have been send to a blank platform, and telling me I was able to talk. However, I reckon there was onlu me based on the members online showed at the sidebar. but I still typied some characters on the blank sheet, and that was only what I can do.

Module 2 - Email Tasks

Email tasks

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?

The tasks’ page has provided an “Email Tutorial” including addresses, messages, attaching files, signatures and mail etiquette. These functions are pretty simple and I have been using them every day, so it is not really hard for me. I then clicked each link into these definitions, then I found some examples showing me how to construct “outlook” etc. I read through these articles pretty quickly.

After all of readings, I started to play a bit of my emails. I opened one of my past emails, and I can see an email message includes the following:

(1) the header of this email message
(2) the name of the sender/organization
(3) the receivers’ name
(4) copied addresses
(5) main body part
(6) signature

I had no difficulties with this task as I have been using it every day.

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email?

(1) cc
“cc” function can be used when you want to send a message to a group of people. Commercial emails can widely use this function.

(2)“bcc”
As this function is not a frequently used one for me, so I searched the definition of this function on “wiki”, and here I got:“Refers to the practice of sending a message to multiple recipients in such a way that what they receive does not contain the complete list of recipients.”

(3) reply all
“reply all” can be used when you want to reply a message from a group of people. When you use these function, your reply can be received by that group of people.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?

I have read through the readings module 2.1, and there are a few ways explaining “Email Attachments”, one of the methods is simple and easy to be opened:“Attach it to an email message and be sure that all members can get it straight away.”

4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

My email account will do the filtering and send some junk email into my rubbish mailbox automatically, and that saves me a lot of time and that could also avoid some virus threating more or less.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

The provided readings have given me a lot of ideas on this task, and here they are:

(1)act as a record of actions and decisions and commitments
(2)can assist in maintaining a conversation over a long period of time
(3)provide a knowledge bank that can be readily accessed for future use
(4)record the interactions between people, providing information on that interaction as well as the content itself

Module 2 - General Readings

I have read through the readings provided, and they are about some general information on emails.

Module 1 - Internet Tool Task & Further Exploration

Today I continue to complete my tasks of module one. There are two widely used internet tools, Traceroute and Ping. I found them by visiting the site provided on webCT (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/router5.htm), and followed the instruction for the use.

TraceRoute:
I inputted "curtin.edu.au" into the blank, and then just click "go", 20 hops comes out, and they are all connected to Curtin.edu.au. what is more, Curtin's IP has been clearly shown on the page, which is "134.7.134.47" .

Ping:

Similar method has been used by using "Ping". I put "curtin.edu.au" in the blank of "domain".

the pockets to send: 5

data size: 32

timeout(ms): 1000

ttl(hoops): 255

Further Exploration

A-Toolbar (Ping to webCT)
This is a nice tool for internet. It can easily show you the hops, packet size, timeout, and number of pings by using both “Ping” and “Trace”.

then I used "trace" to curtin, and here we got:

Module 1 - FTP Task

FTP Task

1. Firstly, I downloaded WS-FTP for a free-use period, and installed it on my PC. I put “recall.curtin.sdu.au” as the ftp host and “anonymous” as the username. Then the following shows up:

2. I found “readme” file in “MSC” folder, and the missing part is "CAPITALIZATION".

12/31/2006

Module 1 - Telnet Task

Telnet Task:

1. I firstly inputted “telnet://” in the URL box of my browser, and then a window showed up:

2. I then inputted “telnet://library.deakin.edu.au/” in the URL box of my browser, and then a window showed up, it asks me which terminal I am using. At the first, I was a bit unsure about this, then I visited our discussion board, after that I chose “v”.

3. Then I have already in Deakin University’s library. It is a similar content to the Curtin Library’s website.

4. I am supposed to search the books following the “author”, and I inputted “Bennahum” as the author of the book.

5. Two books shows up.

6. I then chose to print this page

7. I inputted my email address in my Curtin account

8. After a few minutes I received this page in my Curtin account.

Module 1 - General Reading

Today I read through the online readings of module 1, and gained some general information about the workings of the internet, which include hardware and protocols. I have been using the internet every day, so for this time I got a chance really having a look at it in a deeper way.

Introduction

This log is all for my NET 11 study progress. For the ease of the checking for Cynthia, I will make this blog seperated by each topic from every module.
